Glucosamine/Chondroitin is used in the treatment of Osteoarthritis
Scientific Evidence: Studies of short term effects of Glucosamine show that there are anti-inflammatory properties and lead to temporary relief of pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis. Studies of longer term benefits have yet to be conclusively proven however data has been promising enough to justify a long-term study. This study, sponsored by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, is just beginning and may provide conclusive evidence of long term benefits.
Adverse Reactions/Side Effects: Minor side effects may include diarrhea, heartburn, nausea and indigestion. It must be noted that the glucosamine found in this product, as with other glucosamine products on the market, is harvested from the shells of shell fish. Although no chitin (the chemical that caallergic reactions in people with sensitivity to seafood) is used in the process, persons with sensitivity to seafood should be aware of possible side effects.
